ISSUES

I am running for Clark County Sheriff because I believe America's sheriffs are uniquely positioned to influence criminal justice policy. As your Sheriff, I will use my position to protect civil rights and ensure that those truly deserving remain off the streets. Listed below are the focal points I will follow as your Sheriff.

THE COUNTY JAIL

Like many jails and prisons in America, the Clark County Jail is both overcrowded and understaffed--a dangerous combination that greatly enhances the risk of injury to inmates and officers alike. As Sheriff, I will work with community stakeholders to seek ways to reduce the inmate population to ensure that only the genuinely deserving are behind bars.

THE OPIOID CRISIS

We are not accomplishing anything by continuing to treat opioid addiction as a criminal matter. As Sheriff, as part of my intent to reduce the inmate population at the Clark County Jail, I will ensure that every effort is made to provide those caught in the throes of addiction with the MEDICAL treatment they need, as opposed to incarceration and potential imprisonment. I will also keep our deputies equipped with live-saving tools such as Narcan to help save those in an active overdose, and will develop strategies to provide those who receive such live-saving measures with guidance and encouragement to break free of the chains of addiction.

CIVIL ASSET FORFEITURE

As Sheriff, I will NOT use civil asset forfeiture--in which law enforcement or prosecutors can petition the courts to seize the assets of those accused or convicted of crimes, oftentimes leading to long, drawn-out, and frequently unsuccessful efforts to have such assets returned in the case of an acquittal or overturned conviction--until a person is convicted of a violent, property, or sexual crime, and such conviction is upheld on appeal; additionally, assets forfeited will be sold at public auction, with the proceeds being given to the families of the victims or donated to charitable causes. NO funds from civil asset forfeiture will remain in our accounts, nor will we utilize seized assets for our own use.

DUE PROCESS RIGHTS

As Sheriff, I will ensure that the due process rights of EVERYONE are protected. Nobody will be "guilty until proven innocent".

A FEW MORE THINGS...

All military surplus equipment will be returned to the government or sold at auction to private collectors

Fines will be payable through services such as PayPal, and as Sheriff, I will explore options for accepting cryptocurrency

All financial data pertaining to the sheriff's office will be available online within 24 hours of it becoming available

There will be an open and transparent application process for anyone seeking to become a sheriff's deputy or jail officer
